Abbott is 'car crash of a human being' says John Oliver

AMERICAN comedian John Oliver likens Prime Minister Tony Abbott's leadership to "watching a truck jack-knife on a road" as he visits Australia to spruik his show, Last Week Tonight.

The satirical news show host hit Australian headlines while he was a roving reporter for Jon Stewart's Daily Show, using Australia's gun reforms to highlight how America was failing to make meaningful progress on stopping gun violence.

When he left the blockbuster show to form Last Week Tonight, Oliver used the Prime Minister as comedy fodder.

He skewered the PM by showing a variety of gaffes, including a speech that included Mr Abbott's view that Jesus would support a hard line against asylum seekers.

Talking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Mr Oliver said the Australian PM was "an objectively fascinating man" but he may not hold power for long.

"It's like watching a truck jack-knife on a road," he said.

"It's like, 'It didn't crash this time. Let's give him give minutes then it's going into a ditch."

Despite the tyranny of distance between the United States and Australia, Oliver said Americans appreciated seeing that other countries also had to deal with the missteps of politicians.

"The fact he's the leader of a country is in itself appealing as a comic," Oliver told SMH.

"What's nice is being able to present someone who people have not seen here [in the US] and just to give them a glimpse into other people's pain, as well as their own."
