And the most popular song of 2014 was...

PHARRELL Williams' Happy was the most popular song of 2014.

The American rapper and producer's catchy song, originally penned for the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, was Australia's top selling song of last year after spending 12 weeks at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart.

The Australian Recording Industry Association released its end of year charts results overnight, which list the Top 100 charting songs and albums of 2014.

British singer songwriter Ed Sheeran also had a cracker of a year, releasing the highest selling album of the year, X, which spawned three hit singles including the Top 10 charting Thinking Out Loud.

While Sheeran's X spent six weeks at the top of the ARIA Albums Chart, it was INXS's greatest hits release The Very Best which spent the most weeks, seven, at No 1.

While overseas artists appear to dominate the top end of the lists, 2014 was a good year for Australian artists.

There was an increase in the number of Aussie artists represented in the charts.

Independent Brisbane band Sheppard and Sydney's Justice Crew lead the charge of 18 local acts contributing to the Top 100 Singles Chart, five more than in 2013 and seven more than in 2012.

On the album front, 36 domestic artists charted in the Top 100, nine more than the previous two years.

"2014 was an exciting year on the ARIA Charts, and proved to be a monumental year for our local artists with 16 Australian singles and albums soaring to the top of the charts," said ARIA Chief Executive Officer Dan Rosen said.

"It is extremely pleasing to see 36 Aussie albums in the Top 100 this year. This is a great achievement for our local industry and shows how Australian music fans have embraced our local artists."
