Australian-funded Ebola clinic treats first patient

THE first patient successfully treated at the Australian-funded Ebola clinic in Sierra Leone has been discharged with a clean bill of health.

Family members collected Aminata Bangura, 11, from the clinic last week after she fully recovered from Ebola. She lost other family members to the deadly disease.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said on Wednesday the Australian-managed Ebola Treatment Centre at Hastings Airfield near Freetown in Sierra Leone opened last month.

She said clinic staff had set up a handprint wall for the survivors with Aminata's print the first to adorn the wall.

"The clinic has admitted 37 patients to date and 26 patients are currently receiving treatment," Ms Bishop she said.

"Two other patients have been successfully treated to date.

"Our best wishes are with the Australian health professionals currently working at the Hastings Airfield clinic."

Ms Bishop said Australia's total contribution to the Ebola response was now at $45 million, including $23 million to manage and staff the centre.

Scottish nurse Pauline Cafferkey, 39, remains in a critical but stable condition after contracting the deadly disease while working for the Save the Children at an Ebola treatment centre in Kerry Town, Sierra Leone.
