COLUMN: Autumn is welcome with open arms

WELL, it's still hot!

The first day of autumn came and went without so much as a hint of cooler clime.

But then, that is life in Mackay.

Summer isn't done with us just yet - and if you've been around a while, you'd know some of our worst weather (off the back of a cyclone event to our north or a tardy but "wet season" monsoonal activity) can hit us right through until April.

But do you know what I absolutely love about this time of year?

The PROMISE of cooler weather.

In its ever-so-subtle way, our beloved region has the ways and means of casting a few clever little signs about that show a change is (literally) in the wind.

The sky is that bit clearer. The air feels that touch cleaner and the haze a little less, well, hazy!

There is a wee nip in the air when I sneak out onto the patio in my jarmies to feed the dogs when they wake me at 5am; and little by little the aircon is needed less and less.

Funnily enough I have the same feeling of eager anticipation when spring starts nudging at the calendar.

But after the heat and the vigour, the sunburn and the chlorine bleach, the sand between our toes and the sunscreen under our fingernails - there is something incomparably bittersweet about an autumnal dawning.

Still, any excuse to swap the pluggers for knee-high boots, shorts for tights and light breezy shades for the richer, darker winter hues is welcome, in my book!

Do you enjoy the cooler change?
