Car problems halt Campbell’s debut

WARWICK driver Matt Campbell suffered a tough blow in his debut race in the Porsche Carrera Cup yesterday, with a reported mechanical issue causing a Did Not Finish.

Former Bathurst 1000 champion Steven Richards took out the race from former V8 Supercar driver David Russell.

Earlier in the day, Campbell once again showed his quality, as he finished 12th in qualifying.

Campbell posted a best lap of 1:24:07 on his third lap, trailing Pole Position winner Nick Foster (1:21:87) by less than three seconds.

It followed a strong showing on Thursday, when Campbell finished with the fourth fastest time across three practice sessions.

"I am extremely confident Matt will do well this weekend," team boss Andy McElrea said on Thursday.

"He was the only one of the top-10 who had not raced on the Adelaide street circuit before, most have been here five or six times."

The second Carrera Cup race will take place at 9.10am (Queensland time) today, with the third and final race tomorrow.
