CRICKET: Chadd Sayers has been added to Australia's 15-man squad for the Test tour of South Africa, replacing the injured Jackson Bird.

Bird has been ruled out for a couple of weeks after injuring his hamstring on Sheffield Shield duty for Tasmania over the weekend.

"It's disappointing for Jackson, but it's exciting for Chadd at the same time,"

Captain Steve Smith said on Tuesday after confirming Sayers' call-up. "It's kind of a like-for-like bowler. They both stand the seam up nicely and Chadd's been rewarded for what he's done in Shield cricket for the last couple of years."

Smith, who won the Allan Border Medal on Monday night, was bitterly disappointed for Bird.

The seamer spent most of 2017 running the drinks for Australia, with his one and only Test coming on a MCG pitch so flat it was deemed "poor" by the International Cricket Council.

"It's tough news for him (Bird). He's a terrific guy to have around the group, he works incredibly hard. He's just a great guy to have on tour with you, a terrific team man. I certainly feel for him that he unfortunately has this injury at this time."

Sayers' recall comes after he lashed out at selectors over his surprise snubbing from the original squad.

The 30-year-old, who is yet to debut for Australia, was overlooked for Jhye Richardson despite dominating the Sheffield Shield circuit for the past seven years (246 wickets at 24.11).

"I'm just disappointed and just want some clarity," Sayers said last month after his omission.

"I have tried to call him (chief selectors Trevor Hohns).

"Hopefully he gets back to me tonight and I can have a chat to him and can get some clarity on how Jhye Richardson, who has only played five Shield games, was picked ahead of me.

"I'd like to know where I stand in Cricket Australia's eyes and where I can get in their side. It's quite hard to take at the moment.

"I thought South Africa would have been perfect for my bowling with the conditions over there," he said.

"You watch Vernon Philander go about his business as he does, he takes a lot of wickets in South African conditions."

SQUAD: Steve Smith (capt), David Warner, Cameron Bancroft, Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb, Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Chadd Sayers, Jon Holland, Jhye Richardson.
