A SPECIAL stall will be held at the Porters Community Markets to help and support women in need in Mackay.

The stall will be set up in the Porters complex in Brisbane St from 8am to 1pm and is part of a community project called Bags of Change.

Leanne Simpson from Soroptimist International Mackay said the project started off as Bags for Change and has evolved to included "slippers for stepping up" and "socks for support".

"We are getting ahead of latest fashions with bun beanies," she said.

"Mackay Active Women's Group has been busy producing bags, socks, slippers and beanies using the donated wool, cotton and other craft items."

So far the women have produced over 50 items, taken part in a photo shot for the promotional posters and labelled each bag with its own personal name and description.

"Soroptimist International Mackay members are providing the opportunity and equipment to sell these items to raise funds for the Mackay Women's Centre," she said.

Soroptimist International is a vibrant, dynamic organisation for today's professional and business women.

"We are committed to a world where woman and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong, peaceful communities worldwide," Ms Simpson said.

"The Mackay branch is actively involved in providing opportunities for women and girls to feel valued through their "Real me Shine" project with the Slade Point School, Below the Belt support group, Ovarian Cancer Afternoon Teal and now the "bags for change" project with the Mackay Women's Centre."
