Immigration Dept tight lipped on Gladstone raid

UPDATE SATURDAY: A JOINT investigation between Australian Customs, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, Queensland Police and the Australian Federal Police took Cockatoo Dr residents in New Auckland by surprise yesterday.

Uniformed and plainclothes officers executed warrants on a house about lunchtime.

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection would not provide information on the raid, saying only that it had been a joint operation.

A statement to The Observer said: "As investigations are ongoing, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time."

A resident in a neighbouring house said at first they thought it was a drug raid by local police.

"The house was vacant for ages. About three to four months ago someone moved in. I haven't had anything to do with them, but they haven't been a problem."

Another neighbour said they were impressed with how quiet the operation had been.

"We've been here the whole time and we didn't even know the cops were there," she said.

"We just moved here thinking it was a good neighbourhood but maybe we were wrong?"

FRIDAY: Australian customs officers are currently searching through a home on Cockatoo Dr, New Auckland.

Gladstone Police are assisting.

The operation is expected to take some time.

More information will be released when it's available.
