A BRISBANE man who asked tennis player Maria Sharapova to marry him has been hailed the real winner at the Brisbane International.

29-year-old Damian Torrie held up a sign he'd made with the proposal and yelled out "Marry me Maria Sharapova?" during her first match at the Pat Rafter Arena on Tuesday night.

While she didn't say yes to his proposal, she did agree to autograph Damian's sign and take a selfie with him, which he quickly posted on Twitter.
