HOCKEY: In a massive coup which indicates that grass-roots hockey can indeed lead to great pathways, Gladstone's Gary Porteous is the new Australian Masters Over-45 men's coach.
Porteous, who is the Sparks' men's coach in the Gladstone and District Hockey Association competition, said it is an ambition he has had for some years.
He will lead the Aussie team in the 2018 World Cup in Terrassa, Spain from July 27 to August 5 next year.
Porteous was in Hobart where he coached the Queensland masters team when he found out the news.
"I got a phone call from the co-ordinator of Australian Masters Hockey to say that my nomination and obviously the process of selecting the coach was successful," Porteous said.
Porteous entered the selection process with a CV ahead of the curve and this ultimately won him the gig.
"I think the fact that for the last four years I've been coaching the Queensland over-40s side and we put a few things through change there and there were a couple of things we weren't overly happy with," he said.
Porteous added that he will implement an attacking brand of hockey into the Spain-bound Aussie team.
He replaced Victorian Mark Ford who has moved to coach an older age group Australian team.
