BUTT OUT: Regional co-ordinator for Tackling Smoking and Healthy Lifestyles program Bernard Kelly-Edwards and CEO of Galambila Aboriginal Health Services Kristine Garrett.

AS REGIONAL co-ordinator at the Tackling Smoking and Healthy Lifestyles program at Galambila Aboriginal Health Service, Gumbaynggirr man Bernard Kelly-Edwards knows it's not enough to talk the talk; you have to walk the walk, too.

In his case, he's doing it literally.

With great vision and an inspiring personal mission, in 2011 Bernard gave up smoking, and has remained smoke-free in order to support his community in making the right choices regarding smoking and healthy lifestyles.

He went quite a few steps further last year, embracing a healthy lifestyle in response to living with type-2 diabetes, and has been walking for an hour each day before work, battling through joint pain and becoming slow jogs, which has inspired his team members and community.

"I want to break the cycle of poor health and be the best support I can for my family," he said.

Bernard's passion and drive for change aligns with organisation's vision statement of 'empowering our mob'.

"Galambila is a very special place to work - it is filled with passion for the health of our people," he said.

"We have a great CEO who has a holistic view of supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, with the focus of closing more than just the obvious gaps."

Bernard and the Tackling Smoking and Healthy Lifestyles team will be at the Saltwater Freshwater Festival on Monday 26 January, representing Galambila, the Festival's principle sponsor. The team will be running a video booth for people to share their own healthy living vision and providing a wealth of expertise on giving up smoking and embracing a healthy lifestyle.

Share in the Saltwater Freshwater spirit. Monday January 26, 9am - 5pm. Gold coin entry.
