Robbie Kruse takes control of own destiny

THE last time the Socceroos played in Melbourne, Robbie Kruse played a starring role as Australia beat Jordan 4-0 on the way to qualification for the 2014 World Cup.

But, the 26-year-old is now fit and raring to go ahead of the Socceroos' Asian Cup opener back in the Victorian capital on Friday night.

"Football has a lot of ups and downs," Kruse told

"I've had both, but it's about riding the wave and coming out better at the end.

"Hopefully the luck is turning for me now.

"I really appreciate football now and the Socceroos jersey more so than before my injury because you don't realise the magnitude of wearing the colours of the national team 'til it's taken away."

Meanwhile, Japan and Bahrain have warmed up for the Asian Cup with wins.

Bahrain claimed back-to-back victories for the first time in over a year after defeating Jordan 1-0 in Ballarat, following its 4-1 victory over Saudi Arabia earlier in the week.

Japan was in good goalscoring touch, beating Newcastle side Lambton Jaffas 7-0. The defending Asian Cup champion has now completed its warm-up games ahead of its opening match with debutant Palestine in Newcastle next Monday.
