Man shot in front of kids

A MAN who fired a shotgun at another man while the victim's children watched was sentenced to four years prison.

Paul Lyle Brown, 62, was in a heated dispute with another man at his Nanango home last year when he fired the weapon.

He pleaded guilty in Kingaroy District Court last week to a number of offences, including assault causing bodily harm while armed.

The incident occurred on February 25 while he was out on bail for an unrelated charge.

Brown got into an argument with the man, who was living with his partner and young children on a property owned by Brown.

After starting to fight the man, Brown left the property to grab a shotgun from his car.

Prosecutor Belinda Merrin said Brown intended to severely harm the man.

"He was heard to say 'I'm going to shoot the c***'," Ms Merrin said.

Brown then shot the man in front of the victim's partner and children.

The man received minor injuries from the shrapnel and was not directly hit.

Defence barrister Kylie Hillard said Brown was provoked during the argument.

Judge Katherine McGinness noted that it was far from his first offence, with his first conviction in 1972 and several later.

"You're getting too old for this. It would be nice to think you would spend the next 20 years staying out of trouble," Judge McGinness said.

She sentenced him to four years' jail, but with 11 months already served he will be out on parole in July.
