Muller debuts with a winning double
THE first lever action competition on the Bowen SSAA range last Sunday was classic calibre.
It turned out to be a great tussle between the Bowen pair of Les Fowler and new member Gary Muller.
At the 100-metre targets they went shot for shot to share the lead on 146.
The struggle continued at 50 metres but Muller's 106.1 for a total of 252.1 was enough to secure the win, a terrific effort in his first attempt at the match.
Les Fowler was second on 249.2 and Bloomsbury's Jim Farr third on 230.
In cowboy lever action pistol calibre, Muller led from the first bank of targets with eight to Farr's six.
Farr got one back on the feral pigs and then grabbed the lead with five turkeys to lead by one on 19, to Muller's 18.
Muller held his nerve though and fought back strongly to grab the win with a AA score of 23, another great effort in his first attempt. Farr was second on 22 and Ken Fowler third with 15.
In cowboy small bore silhouette, Bowen's Allen McDonald led out from the first silhouette but he was quickly challenged by Ken Fowler and Preston's Bren Fuller who shared the lead by one after the pigs.
After the notoriously difficult turkeys, McDonald and Fuller tied with 20 while Les and Ken Fowler were only two further back on 18.
After the last bank of targets McDonald and Bren Fuller both finished on a great AA score of 25.
Unfortunately for McDonald his best score for some time saw him lose on a countback to Bren Fuller, with the latter knocking down seven turkeys to his six.
Fuller's effort was superb given it was his first attempt in the match and he had to use a borrowed lever action.
Les Fowler was third on 24, beating son Ken by two.
Next Saturday, pistol shooters are on the range with a metal plate competition commencing at 9am to be followed by single (western) action.
On Sunday, rifle shooters are on the range with rim fire field rifle commencing at 9am followed by centre fire field rifle.
