PARLIAMENTARY rules will be ignored to let Keppel MP Brittany Lauga feed her infant daughter in the chamber.

On Tuesday, Ms Lauga brought her three-month-old daughter Odette into parliament to feed her. She was unaware she was breaching parliamentary standing orders against bringing "strangers" into the chamber.

But on Thursday, new Speaker Curtis Pitt said the rule would be ignored to let Ms Lauga, and any other new parents, being their young children onto the floor of parliament so they can be fed.

Ms Lauga said she was pleased the rule would be ignored, but was surprised Mr Pitt did not decide to change it entirely.

"I think it's a really important day for members of the Queensland parliament, for parents and people across Queensland," she said.

"I was a little bit surprised that the Speaker made the decision to ignore the rule rather than change it."

Ms Lauga said the decision was a step towards an increasingly diverse parliament including people of all backgrounds and in all stages of life.

Mr Pitt's decision to amend the rule was met with cheers on all sides of the house.
