Hanson‘s health care power play

ONE Nation leader Pauline Hanson looks set flex her new power in the Senate by holding the government to ransom over its plan to raise the Medicare levy to fund the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Senator Hanson now has the power to block government legislation if three One Nation senators vote with the Greens and Labor in the upper house against the Coalition after the Nick Xenophon Team's voting power was reduced in the fallout from the citizenship saga.

The Senator has told Fairfax Media she remains in negotiations with the government over the legislation but said she "made it very clear" she had "concerns with the system".

"Accountability is my number one priority to the people of Australia," Senator Hanson told the publication.

"Taxpayers want assurance that the additional taxes they will pay to fund this scheme won't be whittled away through mismanagement.

"Already I read that 10 per cent of all jobs created in Australia last year were funded by the NDIS.

"The NDIS is not meant to be a job creation scheme, it is meant to help vulnerable Australians."

The federal government wants to increase the Medicare levy 0.5 percentage points from July next year, taking it to 2.5 per cent, to fund the NDIS.

Labor and the Greens oppose the hike, with the Opposition arguing only Australians earning more than $87,001 should pay the increased rate.
