MACKAY police have provided a shocking tally of drug and drink-drivers who've run afoul of the Road Policing Unit.
Senior Constable Steve Smith said last week, from November 6 to November 12, a total of 29 drug and drink-drivers were caught on roads in the Mackay policing district.
"The shortest conversation I had with someone today was the one which had the most impact - it was a 15 second hallway chat with the officer in charge of the Road Policing Unit for the Mackay police district,” Snr Const Smith said.
"In short, I asked how last week went for that unit (seven day period - Monday to Sunday) ... 23 drug drivers were caught on roads across our district, 13 of those drug-drivers were caught on Saturday or Sunday.
"Four unlawful drug possession charges were generated from the alleged drug-drivers.
"Six drink-drivers were caught in the same seven-day time period.
Snr Const Said those results "should concern all law-abiding motorists”.
"Drink and drug-driving statistically are included in the top five reasons for causing fatalities on our roads,” he said.
The results "have not gone unnoticed”. Snr Const Smith warned police will be out in force patrolling across the district in coming weeks, performing roadside breath and drug tests.
