Rush to help greyhound ‘victims’ in wake of baiting scandal

AN ORGANISATION which re-homes greyhounds has been swamped with offers of help following revelations of the cruel practices involved in training some dogs for racing.

Katrina Koutsellis, vice-president of Friends of the Hound, said the organisation received 20 inquiries from potential foster carers in the 24 hours after Four Corners exposed the use by some trainers of live animals as dog lures.

"We've been run off our feet. We've had so many amazing responses from beautiful human beings in the area who want to help these dogs," she said.

"I think the whole of Australia has been deeply affected and traumatised by what has been going on.

"These dogs have been victims and what they have been trained to do is deplorable," she said.

Friends of the Hound member and dog behaviour therapist Faith Wild said greyhounds made wonderful pets.

Ms Wild, who owns one greyhound and is fostering two more, said the dogs settled surprisingly quickly after moving out of the racing environment.

She said greyhounds were not aggressive by nature and could be retrained, even after being blooded with live bait.

Wurtulla greyhound owner Jane Rasalala, a member of Greyhounds New Beginnings, Life After the Track, likened greyhounds to a box of chocolates.

"Once you have one, you want more," she said.
