Man in custody after seven-hour siege on Southern Downs

UPDATE 5.20PM: Police have peacefully resolved a siege situation in Karara, west of Warwick, which lasted more than seven hours.

Initial reports suggest the man, 39, will be transported and checked by medical professionals.

He was taken into custody about 5.10pm.

5PM: Queensland Fire and Emergency Services have left the scene of a siege at Karara on the Southern Downs.

The firefighters were stood down from the area shortly before 5pm.

Police negotiations with the man have now entered seven hours.

4PM: Police continue to negotiate with a man holed up inside a rural home. He is believed to have knives.

The siege situation has been ongoing for about six hours after the man made threats towards police who were at the property wanting to speak to him.

Police withdrew from the scene and set up a 1km cordon in the immediate area.

PolAir is at the scene and has refuelled at Warwick.

Police said the man had attempted to light a fire inside the property earlier today but it did not take hold of the property.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and Queensland Ambulance paramedics are on standby at the siege borders.

People are urged to avoid the area.

2.20PM: A man holed up in a property outside Karara could have access to knives but is not believed to be in possession of firearms.

He earlier started a fire inside the residence.

Police said he released his dog from the residence before starting a fire inside, but the fire reportedly did not take hold of the dwelling.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services are on the way to the scene.

Police and PolAir have surrounded the Meiklejohn Rd property and are continuing to negotiate with the man.

Police have declared an exclusion zone that stretches 1km in every direction from the property.

UPDATE 1.35PM: Queensland Fire and Emergency Services are on standby at a rural property where a siege is unfolding.

Police and PolAir have surrounded the Meiklejohn Rd and are continuing to negotiate with a man inside a "stronghold".

It is understood the man has lit a fire inside the home with thick smoke billowing from a chimney.

QFES crews are rushing to be on standby and assist police on the ground.

12.20PM: Police have declared an exclusion zone around a Karara property where a person is holed up, negotiating with police.

The Public Safety Preservation area stretches 1km in every direction from a Meiklejohn Rd property at Karara, a rural community west of Warwick.

Police have located a "stronghold" from which a person is holed up and believed to be threatening to harm themselves.

Negotiators are on scene and PolAir is on the way to the area.

Queensland Police Services would not confirm the gender or age of the person involved.

INITIAL NOON: Police are currently on scene at a home at Karara where a siege is reportedly taking place.

A spokesman from Queensland Police Services said a person was making threats to harm themselves.

Police are reportedly negotiating with the occupant of the house and the person is not believed to be in possession of any weapons.

The spokesman said the incident began about 8am this morning on Meiklejohn Rd.

Queensland Police Services would not confirm the gender or age of the person involved.
