SUVs continue to drive buoyant Australia car market
SPORTS utility vehicles and commercial offerings have driven the highest February new car sales on record in Australia.
Sales figures for last month were 4.2% higher than February 2014.
Major growth came in the compact SUV segment, up 50% on the same period with the Hyundai ix35 (1856), Mitsubishi ASX (1451) and Nissan Qashqai (1126) all going strong.
Medium and large SUV sales grew by about 14 and 19% respectively.
Light commercial vehicle sales increased 2.7%, with the Toyota Hilux (2861), Mitsubishi Triton (1988) and Ford Ranger (1953) on the podium.
Overall, it was the Toyota Corolla that was the number one selling vehicle with 3939 sold. The Corolla was followed by the Mazda3 (3598), Toyota Hilux (2861), Holden Commodore (2517) and Hyundai i30 (2126).
Toyota was the highest selling brand with 18% market share, followed by Mazda 10%, Hyundai 8.9%, Holden 8.6% and Mitsubishi 6.9%.
It wasn't all good news, with the passenger vehicle genre down 6.6% compared to February 2014. Highlighting the move to more compact offerings, nearly half of the vehicles sold came from the small segment.
Sales rose 2.6% in Australian Capital Territory, 5.1% in New South Wales, 10.9% in the Northern Territory, 4.9% in Queensland, 6.1% in South Australia, 11.6% in Tasmania and 5.7% in Victoria.
