Teen in custody after allegedly stealing $5000 of smokes

A TEENAGER is behind bars after allegedly stealing more than $5000-worth of cigarettes and tobacco from a Gympie grocery store.

The 15-year-old boy is accused of breaking into Heilbronn's Friendly Grocer on Duke St on Thursday night by forcing open a side window.

He allegedly got away with thousands of dollars-worth of cigarettes, tobacco, rolling papers and filters.

Gympie Detective Sergeant Rob Lowry said food, charity collection tins and a sum of cash were also stolen from the grocery store.

Staff at the store discovered the theft when they arrived at work about 6.45am yesterday.

The store remained shut yesterday, with police tape wrapped around the front door handles and a sign reading "closed due to break-in, sorry".

An investigation was underway, and by the afternoon detectives had tracked down the suspect.

A search of a Channon St home led police to the stash of stolen goods.

More than 150 packets of cigarettes and 35 pouches of tobacco were part of the haul.

Det Sgt Lowry said the items were fit to be returned to the store and the stolen cash was also recovered.

A 15-year-old boy appeared in Gympie Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon.

He was charged with breaking and entering, committing an indictable offence and drug offences.

The teen was remanded in custody for the weekend and will front the court again on Monday.
