ROAD CLOSURES: 43 roads flooded, 18 under threat across CQ

ROCKHAMPTON Regional Council has updated its warning for "a number of dangerous roads" across the region.

The updated list includes roads from across the region.

"More than half of flood-related deaths are a result of driving through floodwater," council's warning states.

"Even if it looks calm, no one can predict what floodwater will do or what's happened to the road underneath. 

"Any amount of swift flowing water can sweep away your car, no matter what you drive. 

"Don't risk it!"

The updated list is:

  • Old Baree Rd
  • Sunray Avenue
  • Macquarie St
  • Bishop Rd
  • Farm St (Off Holingsworth St gully, near the river end)
  • Ridgelands Road
  • Struck Oil Rd

These roads are open but water is running over the road:

  • Inslay Avenue, Bouldercombe
  • Boundary Rd

UPDATE: 4.30PM: 

WEATHER experts at the Bureau of Meteorology are tipping a deluge in Rockhampton and surrounding regions tomorrow.

BoM is tipping rain and storms for most of Queensland, but it singled out Rockhampton, Yeppoon, and Gladstone as being in the firing line for the heaviest falls.

BoM issued a warning late this afternoon, warning of widespread falls of 80-100m, with localised falls of 100-150mm.

"Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to continue for much of Queensland with the heaviest falls in the central coastal region from Rockhampton and Yeppoon," BoM's release states.

The release also warned of possible flash flooding.

"Localised flash flooding is a possibility … and the public is urged to stay tuned for warnings, exercise caution if caught in a heavy downpour and never walk, ride or drive through floodwaters."

RACQ has added another seven roads to its list of closed roads in the Fitzroy region, bringing the total number of roads underwater to 22.

UPDATE: 2PM: 

DESPITE Rockhampton and surrounding regions copping a deluge today, weather experts at the Bureau of Meteorology are warning the worst is on its way.

Yeppoon has copped 49mm since 9am today and 140mm since 9am yesterday.  Rockhampton has copped nearly 80mm since 9am yesterday.

But BoM weather expert David Crock said the deluge was expected to intensify on Wednesday and Thursday.

"It looks like tomorrow and Thursday is the worst day," Mr Crock said.

He said Rockhampton had a 95% chance of rain with the chance of thunderstorms closing in on the city tomorrow.

"You've got a fair few showers around," he said.

He said a "very moist north-easterly flow" off the Coral sea was sweeping a trough into Central Queensland.

RACQ has added another seven roads to its list of closed roads in the Fitzroy region, bringing the total number of roads underwater to 18.

He said there was still "uncertainty" about Friday's forecasts, but BoM currently expects the weather to head north on Friday.

INITIAL: OVER 85mm has fallen in Yeppoon overnight, with heavier falls predicted to hit the region today and tomorrow.

Rockhampton also experiences showers throughout the night, with the Bureau of Meteorology recording 55.4mm since 9am Monday.

Byfield saw 90mm overnight, while there was 58mm recorded at The Gap.

According to forecasters, this is only set to intensify today and tomorrow with an upper low over inland Queensland and a trough extending through Capricorn Coast producing widespread rain.

Capricornia should see widespread showers and rainfall continue, with possible thunderstorms.

Computer modelling predicts up to 100mm could fall in the region over the next three days.

Central Queenslanders have taken to the Who Got the Rain? Facebook group to report rainfall in their neck of the woods.

An Upper Ulam resident recorded 92mm since Monday, while a Caves local recorded 75mm.

The biggest falls were towards the coast, with 50mm recorded by a Coowonga resident in the past 24 hours, taking their local total to 106mm in 48 hours.

Although there has been less rain recorded, inland areas have also received showers.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded 18.8mm at Emerald since 9am Monday, while 5.6mm was seen at Biloela.

However, areas west of Clermont saw good rain, with 60mm reported on Who Got the Rain? at a property 140km west of the town.
